Will Repellents get a rat out of the attic?
There are various kinds of repellents used in repelling rats from attics, however , they have been
found to be only effective for a short period of time, before rats get used to such products, and
for this reason, repellents are unreliable. Rat repellents can be natural, synthetic, or home made,
the synthetic ones are made of scents that resemble those of predators, thus, they can scare away rats
from the attic. Chemical repellents are also referred to as “Generic” repellents and they often include
scents of common rat enemies such as cats, Foxes, and Coyotes.
Repellents are often sprayed around the attic to create a false impression to a rat that its
enemy is around the corner, thus, the rat will become scared of moving closer. There are several
types of rat repellents available today, these include the following;
- Mott balls, are by far the commonest animal-scent repellents sold in the world today, they are
also referred to as Naphthalene. Many people find the scents in these products very annoying and if
inhaled too much, can trigger allergic reactions including temporary headache. These chemical substances
can also be carcinogenic in nature and can make your house stink, in addition to the fact that they are
temporarily effective against rats.
- Ammonia is another common rat repellent used in the attic and some other parts of the home. Ammonia
also processes strong odours, and are found in paints, and bleaches. Just like Mott balls, Ammonia only
works temporarily and the rats may return to the attic after a while.
- Predator urine is another common product used in scaring away rats. A lot of predators eat rats ,
however rats have come to realize that of they leave their homes, their sources of shelter and food have
gone, therefore, they have devised means of living in an environment where their predators exist- this
makes Predator urine repellents ineffective.
- Peppermint oil is one of the natural repellents that some people use to repel rats from the attic.
Peppermint oil can also be used as a bait with peanuts but it depends on the product in question. Rats
don’t like peppermint scent , thus they move away quickly from an area where they detect the odour, but
they can also get use to such scent just the way they can get use to others.
- The High-Pitch noise machine is a mechanical device that can be used in repelling rats from the attic
base on the sounds they generate. Rats often move away from the sound of man , however, this machine may not
fit perfectly into your attic. Eventually , rats may get use to the sound of a High-Pitch machine and return
to their nests in the attic.
